Neurotoxin is created by a bacterium called clostridium botulinum. When injected in small diluted amounts directly into specific muscles, it causes a controlled weakening by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles. When the muscle can no longer contract, the wrinkles relax.
Neurotoxin has even been known to treat ailments like uncontrolled blinking, or blepharospasm, and lazy eye, or strabismus. The primary cosmetic purpose for neurotoxin treatments is to reduce the appearance of facial creases and wrinkles. It’s especially useful for treating even severe frown lines between the eyebrows, also known as glabellar lines.
It’s a quick procedure that only takes a few minutes without anesthesia. The neurotoxin solution is injected with a fine needle. You might experience mild discomfort during your procedure, but most people don’t notice any discomfort at all.
You should avoid alcohol for a couple of days, and aspirin for a couple of weeks before your procedure to reduce any bruising.
If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you’re not a good candidate for neurotoxin. If you have a neurological disease, you also shouldn’t use neurotoxin.
While most adults are good candidates for tox, our providers will give you a comprehensive consultation to help you to decide the best course of action for you.
It can take three to seven days for you to witness the effects of your neurotoxin. The effects can last up to four months. As your muscle function returns over time, the lines and wrinkles can begin to come back, and you might need more treatments to maintain your smooth complexion.
Following your treatment, you might experience mild headaches and bruising, but this resolves within the first 24 to 48 hours.
Be careful not to rub the treated area for at least 12 hours since the tox can move around and, while rare, result in a drooping eyelid.
It’s entirely safe, FDA-approved, and has been proven successful for many years. While they can reappear, the wrinkles and lines don’t come back as prominent as before, so your tox can have long-lasting, even permanent effects.
